KUCHING: Jun Wei Bintulu Wushu Club reached another milestone in the club’s history by fielding more athletes in the Sarawak Wushu Online Video Championship and representing Sarawak for the first time at the KPM-WFM-MILO National Youth Wushu Online Championship.

According to club president and head coach Jong Chin Wei, the young athletes from the club have done well in both championships.

Five athletes represented Sarawak in the national youth meet from Aug 1 to 31 and they captured two gold and nine silver medals to contribute to the Sarawak team’s medal haul of 38 gold and 41 silver medals.

Aster Dylan Tamat from SJK Kai Ming Bintulu was the club’s star performer as he won the gold in the Boys C changquan (8.05 points) and jianshu (8.08). He also finished second in the qiangshu event (7.90).

Brayden Ha Chen Xuan of SJK Chung Hua Bintulu won the silver medals in the Boys D nanquan, daoshu and gunshu while Astig Luke Tamat from SMK Kidurong bagged silvers in Boys Group B changquan and Boys C jianshu.

The other silver medals were delivered by Jocelyn Ha Chen Xi of SMK Bandar Bintulu in the Girls B 42-style taijiquan and 42style taijijian and Huong Jia Xi of SM Kai Dee Bintulu in the Girls B changquan.

In the Sarawak Wushu Online Video Championship, 43 athletes helped the club to finish third in the inter-centre category after capturing three gold, 85 silver and five bronze medals.

“Despite the limitations in wushu training due to the Covid19 pandemic, the athletes and coaches remained passionate and committed in the training done online.

“This is first time our athletes have competed in the national junior meet and our participation in the state meet has also doubled in term of athletes,” said Jong who is also Wushu Federation of Sarawak secretary.

He said the club’s physical training programmed was halted in February this year and they had to resort to conducting online wushu training course which was a big challenge to both athletes and coaches.

“The athletes were encouraged to continue with training at home and they were closely monitored by our coaches via video calls and recordings.

“They have also displayed a high level of self-discipline and this was a key factor to gaining good results in both competitions. They are also able to obtain extra-curriculum marks for participating in the two meets.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the parents and heads of the schools for their continuous support for our development programme and wushu activities,” added Jong.

He said the club is also preparing its athletes for two more online competitions this year.

Jun Wei Bintulu Wushu Club is recruiting new students for the wushu classes next January. Those interested can log on to the club’s Facebook page for more details on the club programmes and activities.
