SIBU: Independent charity group Sibu Love Run has received more than 400 photos from members of the public, as a show of support for a project run under a deaf awareness programme.

Each photo depicts the sender posing with the forefinger in front of the mouth – the universal gesture of ‘keep quiet’.

Programme volunteer Loh Yu Yee said the pictures were submi ed by people from all over Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.

“I am extremely happy with such overwhelming response. We compiled these photos and turned them into a poster.

“These images would also be featured in our short film, which we would upload on our Facebook page this Sunday (Sept 26) beginning at 9am,” she said, adding that the project is run in connection with the International Day of the Deaf.

To access the short film this Sunday, go to h ps://www. facebook.com/sibuloverun.

According to Loh, the fiveminute film highlights the difficulties that the hearingimpaired people face in their daily lives.

“Hopefully through this short film, people can be more understanding and be compassionate towards the deaf community.

“Truly, they want to communicate but most of the time, they are hindered by this disability,” she said.

Meanwhile tomorrow evening, Sibu Love Run will host the ‘Voices from Silent World’ sharing-session, via its Facebook page with the live broadcast to commence at 7.30pm.

“We have invited two speakers for the sharing-session, also held in connection with the International Day of the Deaf.

The two are president of Deaf Media and Technology Association (DeafMT) Mutharasapan Lakshmanan, and Ling Soon Nguong.

“Watch the session live this Sunday on ‘Sibu Love Run’ Facebook page, or via Zoom using the ID 4337780162 and password 332577.

“The objective of the session is to establish an exclusive platform for the deaf and promote the culture of the deaf, so that more people could walk into ‘the silent world of the deaf’, hear their voices, break the barriers, and reduce misunderstandings,” she said.

Loh also hoped that through the sharing-session, the deaf folk could build self-confidence and find their own value, and at the same time, feel proud of themselves.

“I also hope that through their stories, they would encourage more other deaf people to stand up bravely and speak up for themselves,” she added.
