FoSM to launch virtual exhibition on Sarawak’s botany Oct 2

KUCHING: Friends of Sarawak Museum (FoSM) will be launching a virtual exhibition on ‘Plant People: Unearthing Botany in Sarawak’ Oct 2, 4pm to 5.30pm via Zoom.

It said in a press statement yesterday that the exhibition will tell the story of botany in Sarawak and how scientific study has changed relationsh­ip with amazing plant life.

The exhibition organised by FoSM is part of the Beccari Centenary sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Sarawak.

Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who heads the ministry, will deliver the opening remarks.

To conclude the launch, the exhibition link will be made live to the public and participan­ts at the launch event.

The launch will feature highlights from the exhibition including a moderated discussion on Sarawak’s botanical heritage by Dr Jennifer Morris, exhibition curator of Plant People; plant taxonomist Julia Sang; freelance botanist and Beccari Centenary Project co-advisor Dr Katharine (Kit) Pearce; as well as Sarawak’s first botanist appointed by Forest Department Sarawak, Dr Paul PK Chai.

The Beccari Centenary, themed ‘Revealing Sarawak’s Biodiversi­ty’ and funded by Motac Sarawak, includes the Beccari Discovery Trail at Matang launched last year and a recently concluded talk series.

Another trail with interpreti­ve signs is currently being developed at Kubah National Park near Kuching.

FoSM, a non-profit NGO promoting appreciati­on of Sarawak’s heritage through its museums, is a platform for like-minded societies to engage in cultural and heritage programmes and projects throughout the region.
