Sg Kapit Bridge a boost to villagers and pupils

- James Ling

KAPIT: The just-completed Sungai Kapit Bridge at KM3 of Jalan Bukit Goram near here will provide be er connectivity to the residents there, comprising villagers from 20 longhouses and villages, as well as some 40 teachers and 400 pupils of SK Sungai Kapit.

The RM12-million project kicked off in 2017, where Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the earth-breaking ceremony in October that year.

According to Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, the bridge project was jointly requested by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing and himself, with solid support from Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is Kapit MP.

“I am very pleased that the contractor has completed this project on time. Previously, they (pupils) had to walk some distance along a small ‘lorong’ (lane) and then go across a wooden suspension bridge, just to reach school. The teachers had to park their cars along Jalan Bukit Goram and travelled almost half a kilometre to school every day.

“The bridge crossing posed danger to the children and the teachers, especially during rainy days when the structure became very shaky and its surface slippery.

“Now that the new proper bridge is open, it provides easy and safe access to the primary school. The teachers now can drive straight to the school gate,” said Jamit when met during his visit to the bridge on Sunday.

The assemblyman was accompanied by Kapit District officer Cerisologo Sabut, SK Sungai Kapit headmaster Mohamad Sabri Badi and its parent-teacher association chairman TR Ringgit Gawan, as well as Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Kapit representative Pe er Segie.
