Less water woes in Sibu Jaya when 1,000mm pipe laying completed in December — SRDC deputy chief

SIBU: The low water pressure affecting residents in Sibu Jaya and its surrounding areas is expected to be improved when the laying of 1,000mm Mild Steel Cement Lining (MSCL) pipe from Salim water treatment plant to Farley area is completed this December.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong said the project stretching 1.87km under the jurisdiction of Sibu Water Board (SWB) was part of the Kanowit Water Supply Project Phase 2.

“Currently, approximately 0.37km out of 1.87km is already laid and it is expected to be completed by December.

“Once completed, Sibu Jaya water pressure will be improved,” he told a press conference after attending a briefing with SWB and Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) at SRDC office here yesterday.

The briefing was also attended by SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

According to Wong, the project also includes the 600mm pipe jacking work which will be connected to the existing 600mm pipeline and is expected to be completed by February next year.

“The delay of the project was due to the pipe jacking equipment or materials which are required to be delivered from West Malaysia,” he said.

Earlier, Wong explained that the Kanowit Water Supply Project Phase 2 is mainly to supply water to Kanowit, Machan and Durin areas and partly supplements supply to Kanowit/Julau/Durin as well as Sibu Jaya.

He said the project was to lay approximately 53km of various sizes of pipeline from Salim water treatment plant to Kanowit.

“It also includes the construction of Durin booster station and elevated reservoir at Bukong Jagoi and other associated works.

“Due to the Movement Control Order and Conditional Movement Control Order, the project is targeted to complete by June next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sempurai noted that the residents in Sibu Jaya and its surrounding areas have been facing low water pressure issues for quite long, where SWB has about 6,000 clients.

“The council is concerned about the issue affecting the residents in Sibu Jaya and have brought up the matter to the relevant authorities previously,” he said.

He later urged the residents there to remain patient while waiting for the project to be completed.
