Chinese federation calls for ‘mature politics’ in 12th state election

-

KUCHING: It is hoped that everyone would practise ‘mature politics’, instead of clinging on to the defamatory approach, in the upcoming 12th state election.

In expressing this, Federation of Chinese Associations in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian District (Youth Section) treasurer Aaron Tay said the elections in Sarawak had always been very peaceful and incident-free affairs, ‘because our people put racial and religious harmony and unity above anything else’.

“Such uniqueness and spirit have become more important, especially when this would be the first time for us to have an election during a pandemic,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Adding on, Tay said the people must always be cautious of ‘dirty politics’ and continue to reject extremism; otherwise, these would adversely affect the spirit of unity, peace and harmony among the people in Sarawak.

“Do not fall for dirty politics and extremism, particularly during the campaign or election period, as they have no place in a multiracial and multi-religious society like ours.

“The people of Sarawak must continue to remain united as one – to continue its battle against Covid-19, to ensure a smooth election process, and to move forward together.

“Sarawak can only continue to progress when its people are united, regardless of their race and religion,” he said.

On another matter, Tay called upon political parties and leaders to prioritise the health and safety of the people during the election campaign period.

In pointing this out, he also stressed the importance in complying with all the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure the safety and well-being of the people and also to curb the spread of the virus.

“During my recent visits to markets, coffee shops and commercial centres, many have expressed their concern about a possible surge of Covid-19 (cases) after the state election.

“We hope everyone could continue to play their roles in ensuring that the state polls, during this time, could be conducted in a calm and peaceful manner, as well as adhering strictly to the SOP,” he added.
