CM: Manage mosques and suraus with integrity, profession­alism

SIBU: The leadership and committee members of mosques and suraus in the state must always strive to improve their management with integrity and profession­alism.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said integrity was crucial in every individual.

“They must carry out their duty and responsibi­lity with integrity and avoid any acts and behaviors that are against the teaching of Islam.

“Every work done must be based on taqwa and faith to ensure one’s integrity,” he said when officiatin­g at the opening of a seminar on ‘Sarawak Mosque and Surau Leadership Integrity’ at Sibu Islamic Complex here yesterday.

Abang Johari also called on the committees to take good care and properly manage the finances of mosques and suraus.

He said that during the time of Prophet Muhammad, his friends managed Quba Mosque well after he left the administra­tion to set up Nabawi Mosque in Madinah.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip also spoke at the function.

He said Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) had implemente­d several initiative­s to enhance competency and integrity of the management of mosques and suraus in the state.

“Among the initiative­s is Sarawak Mosque Star Rating Recognitio­n Standard programme which gives a fivestar rating to mosques or suraus that achieved excellence in all aspects of administra­tion, financial management, security and cleanlines­s.

“There are 13 mosques and 51 suraus in Sibu. Three mosques namely Al Muhajirin Mosque at Kampung Salim, Daril Amilin Mosque at Taman Permai and An-Nur Mosque at Jalan Masjid have received the five-star rating,” he said.

Talib said he was optimistic that with these initiative­s, the management and administra­tion of mosques and suraus would be more systematic and in proper order.

The hybrid seminar was participat­ed by 300 mosque and surau committee members, community leaders and ketua kaum, Quran and Fardu Ain class (Kafa) teachers and representa­tives of Muslim nongovernm­ental organisati­ons.

Another 2,000 participan­ts attended the seminar virtually.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and Kuching North City Commission) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and MIS chairman Datu Misnu Taha were also present.
