Petronas contributes 500 mangrove saplings to preserve environment

KERTIH: Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) is continuing its initiative with Yayasan Petronas to help protect and conserve the environment by planting 500 mangrove saplings along the banks of Sungai Kertih here.

This is being done with the cooperation of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and ecoCare Environmental Education Centre, here.

PCSB senior general manager, Peninsular Malaysia Asset, Hafiz Azzad Zubir said 30 volunteers from Petronas, E&P O&M Services Sdn Bhd and MNS, as well as villagers were involved in planting the mangrove trees as part of an important ecosystem of the beach and riverside areas.

“The mangrove reforestation programme, through the ‘Sentuhan Alam’ programme, is among our efforts to ensure nature’s sustainability and continuity for future generations.

“It also reflects Petronas’ commitment in balancing physical progress and social development in areas that we operate,” he said at the mangrove sapling-planting programme, held together with Petronas volunteers, at Sungai Kertih on Tuesday.

Hafiz said this programme involved volunteers from Petronas in order to give the staff exposure to environmental care and conservation.

Meanwhile, ecoCare Environmental Education Centre manager, Muhammad Yazid Deraman said the mangrove reforestation programme undertaken by Petronas not only had a big impact on the ecosystem and underwater life in Sungai Kerteh but also benefited the local community, economically.

“The planting process or reforestation with mangrove trees will prepare the habitat for underwater life such as fish and crabs which are among the sources of livelihood of the residents.

“To organise activities like today, we encourage the direct involvement of residents to provide boat rental services and act as facilitators to help the volunteers in carrying out the nursery work and planting of the mangrove saplings,’’ he added, while announcing the centre’s opening to the public.
