SEDC, AMG meet with Abang Johari on medical innovation hub

KUCHING: Sarawak Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n (SEDC) and Arrow Medsource Group (AMG), a North American health care supply chain management company and its North American high profile partners met with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for a briefing on the Sarawak Medical Innovation and Technology Hub (SMITH).

According to SEDC, SMITH is a medical innovation manufactur­ing hub formed by SEDC with several high-profile global partners aimed at Sarawak being one of the important solutions in the global medical supply chain.

SMITH aims to bring on medical manufactur­ing strength in Sarawak from foundation­ally needed medical supplies to high end surgical products manufactur­ing. This project is expected to strengthen the region’s job creation in the medical field as well as bring on much needed medical resources for the region.

When SEDC Energy saw this opportunit­y in May 2021, it swi ly utilised the strength of Sarawak’s renewable energy, petrochemi­cal capability and other fundamenta­l strengths in Sarawak and a racted the immediate a ention of global key stakeholde­rs in the health sciences to take a closer look at Sarawak. SEDC Energy entered into an MOC with the stake holders to continue to take the project to the next level.

“We are expecting our key partners to visit Sarawak very soon to expedite the developmen­t of this project,” said SEDC Energy chief executive officer Robert Hardin in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Arrow Medsource Group chief executive officer Kevin Teng said the state’s stability and vision gives them confidence to implement the project.

“This will be one of many milestones that we will execute in the coming months,” said Teng.

The Chief Minister expressed his support for the project, indicating that this will spur new industries in Sarawak, and expressed his thanks to SEDC for continuous developmen­t of Sarawak and bringing on new opportunit­ies for the region.

Also present were Economic Planning Unit Sarawak director Datu Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Dato Husain and SEDC general manager Abdul Hadi Datuk Abdul Kadir.
