KUCHING: For the first time in 10 years, in form Titans are looking to reach the final of the Championship Trophy of the OBYU-KGS Team Matchplay Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) in Petra Jaya.
They are now touted as the hot favourites to lift the title after having stayed unbeaten and finishing third in 2019 and 2020.
Titans captain John Cheu is aware of facing tough challenge from Team Harmoni One in the semi-final today.
“We are hoping to be third time lucky but there is another hurdle for us to overcome and we are meeting a strong Team Harmoni One in the semi-final tomorrow,” he said.
“Team Harmoni One is the elite of the two Harmoni teams and they are both strong teams because they have easily qualified for the last four of the championship.”
According to Cheu, Harmoni One has a good mix of new faces and experienced campaigners, making them one of the teams to watch this year.
“We will make some changes to counter their strengths and also tackling their weaknesses tomorrow and vying for our first final,” added Cheu.
However, Harmoni One captain Hasweera Hassan struck a humble note and regarded his team as the underdogs, adding that their run to the semi-finals was unexpected.
“The team played well in the quarterfinals beating King Lobster.
“We are prepared to meet Titans tomorrow and field our best players. Titans will be strong opponents but we have our strategy to counter them.
“It will be an interesting game and the best team will win,” he added.
In the other semi-final, MH KGS Juniors captain Mohamad Lokman Mustaffa is hoping for his team’s quarterfinals performance to continue and keep the momentum going against Team Harmoni Two.
“We are all prepared for tomorrow’s match against Harmoni Two.
“As usual we are depending on our young players to do well and register another victory to go into the final,” he said.
Meanwhile, Team Harmoni Two team manager Haidel Hedi said the two Harmoni teams were lucky to have both entered the semi-finals this year.
“I am hoping for both teams to win tomorrow and make it an all-Harmoni affair in the final. We will be playing against two strong teams and I believe they are as eager to win too,” he said.
“For the record, we have never beaten the Juniors before and we have only won this championships once,” added Haidel.
The semi-finals of the Shield Trophy will also be played today, with J&J5 taking on Mix-Fit at the Matang Nines while Si’at Balau will face Warriors at the Santubong Nines.
