BN wins with two-thirds majority
MELAKA: Barisan Nasional (BN) achieved a landslide victory tonight in the Melaka election, securing a two-thirds majority.
The coalition of Umno, MCA and MIC captured 21 of the 28 seats contested while Pakatan Harapan (PH) won five seats through DAP and Perikatan Nasional (PN) took two seats.
Parti Bumiputra Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), which contested in five seats, and Parti Periktan India Muslim Nasional (IMAN), which contested in one seat, as well as all the 22 independent candidates did not win any seat.
The last time BN won Melaka with a two-thirds majority was in the 12th General Election (GE12) in 2008, when it won 23 seats.
All the four assemblymen who withdrew their support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Mohd Ali and triggered the election also lost.
The biggest losers among the parties are PAS and PKR which contested ineight and eleven seats respectively failed to win any seat.
The other parties which failed to winany seats Gerakan whcih contested in five seats and Amanah which entered the fray in nine seats.
The PH coalition conceded defeat.
“We would like to state that the people of Melaka have made their decisions through the ballot box,” PH secretarygeneral Saifuddin Nasution told a news conference, as quoted by The Star daily.
“And based on that, it shows that they wanted Barisan to form a government and Pakatan needs to respect the results,” he added.
Speaking at a media conference, BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid said BN will propose five resolutions that will weigh on an agenda for transformation and consolidation towards achieving political stability in Melaka following its two-thirds victory.
He said BN will propose these resolutions at the first sitting of the Melaka state legislative assembly’s new term.
