DAP candidate hopeful says this election tough, but undeterred

-

MIRI: Although DAP Miri Youth chief Peter Hee expects the 12th state election will be a tough fight but he is undeterred and will do his best to serve the people and earn the voters’ trust.

When contacted yesterday, Hee, a potential candidate for one of three seats in Miri, said the Covid-19 pandemic was one of the contributing factors to the challenges.

“In the past, DAP attracted huge crowds at campaign talks, going to the ground and talking to the people. Now not only are we not able to do so, we face the risk of being compounded. Financially, we are at a disadvantage, so we have to be extra careful in doing everything during the campaign period,” he said.

Where will he stand? Hee said it would be revealed by Pakatan Harapan Sarawak before nomination day.

“Traditionally, all three seats – Piasau, Pujut, Senadin - are allocated to DAP. It was agreed amongst PH Sarawak coalition. I have no problem which seat I am allocated because I have been on the ground visiting all the places and the people,” he added.

He added that though Pujut had always been a ‘sure win’ for DAP, it would be unpredictable this time.

“I am afraid there is no such thing as ‘sure win’ anymore because this pandemic has caused a lot of fear among the people, particularly the Chinese.

“We were already appalled by the fact that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) had sought the Agong’s consent to lift the Emergency. We have seen the turnout among Chinese voters is so low, and it may happen here. With the pandemic and standard operating procedure (SOP) in place, we (the opposition) may have to prepare to lose all our seats,” said Hee.

Still, he added, it was impossible to predict anything but to face the situation when it comes.
