MIRI: Over 70 per cent of Kolej Komuniti Miri students have obtained employment right after graduation, while the rest of the graduates pursued higher tertiary studies.

In this regard, Kolej Komuniti Miri director Hazatta Morshidi said the data obtained from the ‘2020 Graduate Marketability Study’ reflected the success of the college’s well-established education system in producing competitive, capable and marketable graduates.

“The findings from this study can evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, with regard to employment after graduation and the contribution of the community college to the needs of the workforce, which has always been an industry choice.

“The community college is an educational platform for the people to acquire knowledge, skills, intellectual capital including science, technology and entrepreneurship, as well as to cultivate a progressive attitude and also high ethical and moral values, in line with the government’s desire of producing more skilled workers for industries,” said Hazatta in his welcoming speech for Kolej Komuniti Miri’s inaugural convocation, which was broadcast live via Facebook yesterday.

Fifteen students received their Certificate in Interior Design (CID), and 36 got their Certificate in Industrial Maintenance (CIM).

Meanwhile, Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Zainab Ahmad said the diploma and certificate programmes offered at community colleges had been developed with the industry and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and other relevant bodies.

“This would ensure that community college graduates remain relevant with the latest skills, and are able to enter the workforce and meet the needs of the current market, or further their studies to a higher level.

“Besides that, community colleges have also been proven to have produced many TVET (technical education and vocational training) graduates with good entrepreneurial skills, many of whom have gone on to become successful job creators in their respective fields.

“This convocation ceremony is a starting platform for graduates to prepare themselves with a proactive, creative and competitive attitude towards elevating the country’s TVET education to a higher level,” she said.

Two CIM students, Mohamad Zakaria Abdullah and MohdArRafi Majalani, were announced as recipients of the ‘Outstanding Student Awards’ during the ceremony.

Mohamad Zakaria was also named the ‘Best Graduating Student - June 2020’ for the CIM programme, while Mohd SyazwanIzzat Azmi received the same award for the CID programme.

The ‘Best Graduating Student Award-February 2021’ was awarded to Mohd Ar-Rafi (CIM) and Mohammad Fadhlullah Mohamad Zulkeria (CID).
