KUCHING: A total of 92 Year 11 students passed out from St Joseph’s International School here recently in a graduation ceremony preceded by an online mass and blessing of the newly constructed indoor basketball court.

The court, which also serves as a multi-purpose venue, was constructed with considerable contributions from donors who valued the physical development of the students. It was a point that did not escape the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching Most Revd Simon Poh.

He stressed the importance of physical activities as part of student development. The blessing of the basketball court reflects the school motto ‘Ora Et Labora’ – we work hard and play hard to succeed – he said. He also remarked on the challenging times of the pandemic and commended the school for meeting that challenge.

“The high school days during the Covid-19 pandemic have been challenging but with every crisis that we face, opportunities arise.

“We have indeed led the way along the academic path, pioneering in e-learning and adopting a wide range of e-tools in the learning process,” he said.

Meanwhile, St Joseph’s Family of Schools chief executive officer Christoper Chua thanked parents, guardians and staff for guiding the students in their journey to complete the high school years.

He congratulated the students for their success in completing all five years and arming themselves with necessary knowledge and faith to face the future.

“Graduation is not an end but is a beginning of opportunities and challenges ahead. It is not just about receiving certificates but a time to reflect on memories and to celebrate academic achievements.

“Graduation opens doors for the future to tackle new experiences with lessons learnt from the past,” he said.

Also present during the ceremony was the school principal Brother Robert Teoh.
