Practise healthy lifestyle to combat kidney diseases — Temenggong
SIBU: Sibu Kidney Foundation (SKF) board of trustees chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming has advised the people to practise a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce the risk of ge ing kidney diseases.
He said people with high blood pressure and diabetes have a higher risk of ge ing kidney disease, hence leading to kidney failure.
“We always say prevention is be er than cure. But in this case, there is no cure. So it’s be er you live a healthy lifestyle to avoid ge ing the disease,” he said to reporters a er witnessing the handing over of the Hunter Air Purifier machine from Gree Malaysia to SKF yesterday.
Among those at the event were SKF manager Ivy Lau and Gree Malaysia Sibu branch manager Benny Lau.
Temenggong Lau revealed that SKF have 78 patients on kidney dialysis, an increase compared to three years ago when there were only 35.
The youngest patient currently is a 24-year-old woman and the oldest an 80-year-old woman, he added.
He noted that SKF has almost reached its capacity in handling the kidney patients and they are looking into ways to expand the area so as to accommodate more patients.
They are also pu ing in efforts to help educate the people on how to prevent ge ing the disease.
SKF is into its 28th year a er been established in 1993. Lau was grateful to the people for their donations and contributions to SKF over the years to ensure it can continue to arrange and provide the best facilities.
From using the Hemodialysis (HD) machine for kidney dialysis, he said, they have now switched to use Hemodiafiltration (HDF) machine which provides be er benefits for the patients.
“Currently, we have 22 HDF machine servicing two-third of the patients and the results are be er compared to patients using HD machine for kidney dialysis,’ he explained. “Using HD machine for kidney dialysis will eventually be phased out as we strive to improve on be er ways for patients to undergo kidney dialysis,” Lau added.
