Lau: Vote for change, development in Bawang Assan

-

SIBU: It’s time for a change to bring about greater development to Bawang Assan, says Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for the constituency Robert Lau Hui Yew.

He said Bawang Assan voters had supported the same person for the past 30 years but nothing has changed.

“It is time to change and get someone who can push ideas through and get things done,” he said at the launching of his manifesto in Paramount Hotel here yesterday.

Lau pledged to address lack of infrastructure development and planned to develop Bawang Assan including two bridges connecting Sibu with Paradom.

The area currently only has the Igan Bridge which is about 20 minutes’ drive from town.

“With these two new links, Sibu would be connected to Sarikei, Bintangor, to reach areas such as Pakan, Julau and so forth. Bawang Assan would benefit directly.

“Only the government of the day can deliver. GPS will continue to be the government come Dec 19,” he said confidently.

According to Lau, the century old Bawang Assan does not have much physical development compared to three-decade old Sibujaya which already has 500 shophouses built by local investors.

“There is a lot of land in Bawang Assan but why are the investors not interested but go to Sibujaya to build

500 shops instead? I think it is a time for leadership change there.

“My proposal for a bridge to link Sungai Bidut with Sibu means only a five-minute drive which would open up the area for development.

Once elected, Lau said he would push for better infrastructure to solve issues of low water pressure, electricity supply, flooding besides installing more streetlights and emphasising education.

“We need more Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in central zone. We have lots of students who are not good academically and need to be trained with skills.

“I also want every longhouse at Bawang Assan constituency to have a study corner for children to do their homework and reading,” he added.

He hoped that voters in Bawang Assan and Sarawak would put their trust in GPS.

Lau will be facing the incumbent Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh from Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Amy Lau

Bik Yieng from Democratic Action Party (DAP), Michelle Ling Shyan Mih from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and independent Ricky Enteri on Dec 18.
