Wee wants to serve more people through DUN

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who is the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Padungan candidate, said if he were elected he would be able to serve those living in areas beyond the MBKS jurisdiction.

However, he assured that he would still serve the people in his capacity as the mayor of Kuching South.

“Under MBKS, the jurisdiction for the constituency (Padungan) stops somewhere at TuaPek Kong temple (along JalanTunku Abdul Rahman).

“I, myself, am from India Street, which is under the DBKU (Kuching North City Commission), so it is not right for me (as mayor) to go into that area because it’s under another local authority.

“So the way I look at it, under Padungan constituency, it’s just the addition of a few more areas. I’m not trying to be greedy, but I do believe that it is still within my reach and I’ll be able to contribute, should I be elected as the Padungan representative,” he told a press conference conducted via Zoom Friday.

He pointed out that having been entrusted by the GPS and the SUPP to contest in Padungan, he would do his best to wrest the seat from Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Adding on, he said over the years, he had been actively involved in organisations that had been contributing to the development of Sarawak, particularly in terms of tourism. “I have 16 years of experience in the tourism sector, including having served as the president of Sarawak Tourism Federation, as well as chairman of the BIMPEAGA (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area)Tourism Council Malaysia.

“I was also a DBKU commissioner for seven years, and you can see how an area like India Street, which is over 170 years old, remains as vibrant as it has always been,” he said.

He also said since his appointment as Kuching South mayor in 2019, he had been doing his part, as a leader of a local government, in helping the people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic period.

“One of the achievements was making use of our MBKS facilities to hold blood donations during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, and within a few month, we were at the top of the list in the country in terms of blood donated during the time of the pandemic.

“These are the things we have done; the facts and figures are all there for all to see.

‘Should the people recognise and have seen what I have done for them, then I appeal to them to give me a chance to serve them,” he said.

Wee attributed his achievements over the years to having a great team on his side.

“It is not a one-man show, regardless of whether a person is an elected representative or a mayor. It is all due to teamwork – you’re able to gather people together to assist you in making things happen.

“I have proven that we have a good team and we can see that what we have achieved is proof to the people that it is not done by me alone, but by a group of people who have the spirit to fight and the dream to make Padungan a better place for everyone.

“With this team, we should be able to serve everyone and make sure that no one is left behind,” he added.
