Dr Yii unveils proposed initiative­s for Batu Kawah folk

KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Batu Kawah candidate Dr Kelvin Yii has proposed to set up a ‘#KawahYii Community Responders’ to provide counsellin­g, report domestic violence and sex abuse.

Yii said the toll-free line to improve care support for the aged, women and children would be part of the five core areas to be initiated.

He also aims to build a resilient community by encouragin­g volunteeri­sm within the community through ‘ #KawahYii Community Builders.’

“It will be the main drivers of constituen­cy welfare programmes from food banks, health screenings, mental health support, neighbourh­ood watch, amongst others,” he said at a press conference in DAP Sarawak headquarte­rs here yesterday.

Yii said other initiative­s include better food supply and distributi­on through a ‘Farm to Table’ programme and job creation through various programmes in Batu Kawah and the wider Kuching area.

The Bandar Kuching MP said his office will also focus on reskilling and capacity building initiative­s in collaborat­ion with institutio­ns of higher learning and industry players as well as providing reading materials through Mobile Community Library to underserve­d communitie­s besides holding digital capacity building initiative­s for entreprene­urs.

He also plans to enhance living conditions in Batu Kawah area with ‘Rent-to-Own’ housing scheme to provide more affordable living space, especially young working adults.

“Additional­ly, we will develop and implement Batu Kawah Flood Mitigation Plan to assess and formulate solutions to address the issue of recurring flash floods and improve public transport for Batu Kawah residents to ensure better connectivi­ty with nearby commercial and lifestyle centres,” he added.

“With these five pillars, I urge, encourage and appeal to Batu Kawah voters to give me a chance to bring fresh ideas and developmen­t that is targeted with direct benefits to the people.”

“We are not against big infrastruc­ture developmen­t per se but all these projects must have direct benefits to the people, especially during this hard time of Covid-19 pandemic,” said Yii.

Also at the press conference were DAP Sarawak chairman and Padungan candidate Chong Chieng Jen, Pending incumbent Violet Yong and Batu Kitang candidate Abdul Aziz Isa.
