Centexs eyes diversifying skills programmes via future tie-ups with SEB

-

KUCHING: Sarawak Centre of Technical Excellence (Centexs) plans to diversify its training and skills programmes through more future collaborations with Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB).

According to the academy’s deputy director (industry) Dr Nadianatra Musa, these planned programmes should add to the present ‘Work At Height’ (WAH) programme run with the SEB for its contractors.

“Apart from offering WAH job-training programmes to SEB contractors, there are many other programmes that we want to highlight, in view of demands from electricians and electrical machinery operators.

“They (programmes) include Smart Automation Building that may be introduced to the contractors,” she told reporters when met after the WAH certificate presentation ceremony at the Centexs hall in Santubong near here yesterday.

Adding on, Nadianatra said the new programmes for the contractors would be in line with meeting the needs under the ‘Digital Economy’ agenda.

Meanwhile, SEB senior manager (occupational safety) Effendy Syaiful Abdullah said all contractors of the corporation must ensure that each of their employees would be WAHaccredited.

“It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that the employees are protected from the risks of danger in the workplace.

The matter is enshrined under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 Section 15, which explains the responsibilities of employers towards employees.

“If we look at the policies of companies working under SEB, one of the responsibilities stated is that the employers must ensure that all employees involved in high-risk work are well-trained,” he said.

Fifty-one people from 19 companies registered under SEB attended the Community Technical Outreach Programme (C-TOP) held at Centexs yesterday, meant to train towerclimbing participants.

According to Centexs, each participant would be given a WAH certificate upon completion of training.

“Centexs is targeting 500 ‘tower-climbing’ contractors by 2022,” said the centre in a statement.

Under the programme, registered contractors also underwent theory sessions and demonstrations on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other related items, as well as experienced the real situation in the field of WAH.

The training was held as consequent of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Dec 1 last year between Centexs and SEB. Among the areas of cooperation being covered under the MoU was capacity-building for contractors registered under the SEB.
