MIRI: A charitable home here, Pusat Jagaan Anak Kesayangan Kami (PJAKK), is seeking continuous support and public donation to run the centre at Jalan Pujut 8.

PJAKK’s person-in-charge Syakirah Husain said the centre is relying on public donation to finance its cost of operation.

“It costs us about RM20,000 a month to run the centre’s operation.

“We are very grateful for having some generous people here from different races and religions who have come forward to assist us by contributing daily essential needs especially food as well as donating some cash for us to finance the centre’s operation,” she stated when met at the PJAKK in Pujut 8 yesterday.

Besides serving as a welfare home for orphans, Syakirah said PJAKK also provides shelter to children from hardcore poor and broken families.

To date, she added, a total of 50 children aged four to 18 years had registered with the centre – 23 girls and 27 boys.

To provide accommodation for the children, she said the centre rented two houses which were turned into hostels, namely ‘Asrama Putra’ for boys at Jln Pujut 7B while the girls stayed at ‘Asrama Puteri’ at Jalan Pujut 8.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the state, the centre faced financial constraint and was unable to pay for the rental for several months, she added.

“During that time, many people suffered due to the Covid-19

pandemic, thus financial support from the public received by the centre had also dropped.

“Even so, we are very thankful to the house owners for the kindness of not chasing for payment for the rentals.

This is something that really touched our hearts.” Apart from appealing for public’s continuous support, she said the centre was in the process of applying for financial assistance from the government through the Welfare Department.

She really hoped the Welfare Department would speed up the application process in order to ease the centre’s financial burden in running its operation.

Earlier, Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Miri team donated some foods and Covid-19 safety kits to the PJAKK.

A spokesperson from the team, Bruce Chai, who is the PSB Pujut branch chairman, hoped their contribution would at least
