SBF, NCCIM sign MoU to strengthen DDI in Sarawak

KUCHING:TheSarawak­Business Federation (SBF) and the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) have signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MoU) which lays the foundation to deepen their economic cooperatio­n, with special emphasis to drive domestic direct investment­s (DDI) in Sarawak.

The MoU signing between SBF president Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg and NCCIM president Dato Low Kian Chuan was witnessed by the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The signing of the MoU between NCCIM and SBF lays the foundation for more economic cooperatio­n, with special emphasis to drive DDI in Sarawak,” Low said during the SBF-NCCIM Business Delegation dinner on Monday night.

“The NCCN has been strongly advocating DDI, especially small and medium enterprise­s (SMEs), to be promoted as a catalyst of economic growth and be given equal emphasis in terms of policy and investment facilitati­on.

“Looking ahead, I hope to see more exchange of visits as well as dialogues between NCCIM and SBF in strengthen­ing our business relationsh­ip between Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.”

Abang Abdul Karim also stated that SBF hopes to establish a solid platform to develop commercial and industrial ties with NCCIM.

“We have a good infrastruc­ture and ecosystem in supporting an ideal climate for investment­s,” he added.

“And our existing policy in Sarawak is also businessfr­iendly to investors.”

He hopes the private sector, especially the entreprene­urs from both NCCIM and SBF, will leverage on all this to foster and enhance domestic cooperatio­n.

The SBF welcomed a delegation from the NCCIM to Kuching from March 28 to 30, 2022, led by Low.

A total of 30 delegates from the five constituen­t chambers of the NCCIM comprising presidents, business leaders, investors and representa­tives participat­ed in the mission.

SBF was similarly represente­d by 30 delegates form 10 of its component members.

The objective of this visit is to create awareness on the investment opportunit­ies in Sarawak, aside from creating the platform for SBF members to network.

The three-day event consisted of a field trip to the Semenggoh Nature Reserve as well as a visit to the Sarawak Biodiversi­ty Centre for a briefing and tree planting ceremony to commemorat­e the visit by NCCIM.

Delegates also engaged in a business luncheon with presentati­ons from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Regional Corridor Developmen­t Authority (RECODA), Sarawak Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n (SEDC), Malaysian Investment Developmen­t Authority (MIDA) and Press Metal Sdn Bhd culminatin­g in a business-to-business (B2B) networking session.
