Angie Garet new SWWS president
KUCHING: Dr Angie Garet is the new president of Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) taking over from Margaret Bedus who has stepped down during its annual general meeting (AGM) recently.
In her acceptance speech, Angie thanked the previous committee for all their hard work and passion in helping women, especially Margaret for her outstanding commitment over the years and her willingness to continue to be active in combating domestic violence, a core concern of SWWS and one where new plans are afoot in terms of training and support.
Angie is a recently retired teacher trainer and counsellor who has been with the organisation for many years and has been active in bringing SWWS’s child safety training across the state, including to teachers.
She is assisted by Kimberley Tan, a young member who has successfully led both the #bukansalahkamek and period poverty campaigns.
They are both passionate that all children should be taught age-appropriate ways about good and bad touches and who to tell if anyone makes them feel unsafe.
Meanwhile, Margaret, one of the pioneers of SWWS, said it was important for others to have a chance to lead the organisation in keeping with SWWS’ belief in spreading opportunities among women.
She said she would still be contributing as a committee member.
“This reflects SWWS’ ethos of combining the vision, commitment and expertise of both older and younger women so we stay relevant across generations of women. Our newly elected committee members are more diverse in age and ethnicity, which is exactly what we want,” she said.
