KUCHING: Local communities especially those from villages facing drug abuse problems are urged to work with the Drug Prevention Association of Malaysia (Pemadam) Sarawak to reduce the social ill.
In making this call yesterday, Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali said the local people should play a more proactive role in keeping drug abuse at bay.
“We need to warn our children the danger of drugs by creating awareness of such danger among the younger generation. If possible, we want to organise drug prevention campaigns yearly and in all villages.
“We shall go into villages in Samariang and especially those facing drug abuse issues. We want to make sure that our children keep themselves away from drugs,” she said at the ‘Pemadam Care For You’ bubur lambuk distribution programme at Kampung Malaysia Jaya in Petra Jaya here.
Pemadam Sarawak prepared 500 packs of bubur lambuk for the event held in conjunction with the Ramadan month.
Sharifah Hasidah, who is also Samariang assemblywoman, said she is aware that some villages in her constituency are facing serious drug abuse problems. It is because of this, she added, every resident should work together to fight this social ill to better protect the younger generation.
“Drugs continue being our enemy. We thank Pemadam Sarawak for bringing the programme to Samariang. If need be, various villages should contact Pemadam Sarawak and organise drug prevention campaigns together.
“We hope that through drug prevention campaigns our young people will keep away from drugs,” she added.
