As we move to Covid-19 endemic phase, SSPCA hopes to partner more local councils to reintroduce subsidised neutering campaigns. We were very happy to engage with responsible pet owners of Serian who understand the need to prevent unplanned pet pregnancies.

KUCHING: A total of 44 pet cats and dogs were neutered on Wednesday in the school hall of SJK Chung Hua Serian in a subsidised neutering campaign held by Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), Immune Belt Enforcement Team (IBET) and Serian Council.
SSPCA president Datin Dona Drury Wee said the Society has always advocated vaccination and neutering as humane methods to eradicate rabies.
“As we move to Covid-19 endemic phase, SSPCA hopes to partner more local councils to reintroduce subsidised neutering campaigns.
“We were very happy to engage with responsible pet owners of Serian who understand the need to prevent unplanned pet pregnancies,” she said at the campaign.
Sarawak Veterinary Association (SVA) president Dr Kelvin Chai said pet ownership is about responsibility towards the animal including their babies.
“Neutering can help to solve not just your problem, but also helps to prevent your pet from potential life threatening diseases like pyometra and tumours,” he said.
Dr Chai and four veterinarians from Kuching had volunteered their time and expertise for the programme from 9 am to 5pm.
Co-organiser of Rabies in Borneo Conference 2022 Place Borneo Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mona Manap said the benefits of neutering and vaccinating pets against rabies needs increased awareness.
“That is why we have created Rabies in Borneo Conference together with DVS Sarawak to continue educating the public and volunteer in more neutering and vaccination programmes,” she stated.
The Wednesday campaign was continuation of mass anti-rabies vaccination, micro chipping and dog licensing programme held last Saturday at Serian community hall and DVSS headquarters which vaccinated over 300 dogs.
DVS Sarawak plans to hold several more anti-rabies and neutering programmes this year to provide easy access to vaccination, dog-licensing, micro chipping and neutering.
