Kuching paddlers to compete in Sarawak Table Tennis C’ships
KUCHING: The Kuching Division Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) are sending a sevenmember team to the Sarawak Table Tennis Championships to be held at the Sibu Ping Pong Stadium this weekend.
KDTTA chairman Helena Christine Wee said the boys team comprises Too Ying Chuen, Christopher Goh Kho Hian Hui, Lee Yee Jat and Benjamin Thien Khang Chenn.
The girls are Too Ying Xin, Tan Chung Yi and Candy Tan Poh Tze while the team manager is Tay Lynn Jia.
“We are banking on the boys to deliver the medals in this meet and also hoping for the girls to win something too.
“Ying Chuen was a five-gold medallist at the last Sarawak Championship held in Kuching in 2019.
“He partnered Christopher Goh to bag the bronze in the men’s doubles at the Malaysian Open in Melaka in 2019,” Helena told The Borneo Post yesterday.
However, she is unsure whether the boys could perform up to expectations as they have been juggling training and studies.
“It will depend very much on their match day performance and their playing experience,” added Helena.
Ying Chuen is currently undergoing online studies with the Nanjing University, Christopher Goh on online study with Sunway College Kuala Lumpur, Lee just completed his SPM examination while Benjamin Thian will be sitting for his UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) this year.
Meanwhile, the championships – jointly organised by the Sarawak Table Tennis Association and Sarawak Sports Corporation and hosted by the Sibu Division Table Tennis Association – has attracted the participation of 19 girls and 26 boys from Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
The main objective of this championship is to select five players each from the boys and girls categories to represent Sarawak at the 57th Malaysia Table Tennis Championship in Kuala Lumpur from June 7 to 10 this year.
Other objectives include further promoting the sport, enhance ties between participating teams and providing a platform for the paddlers to gauge their standard.
