NUMed, UoRM nurture future-ready graduates
KUCHING: Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) and University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) strive to develop graduates who are well-prepared for future careers.
Bringing the best of Newcastle University in the UK to Malaysian shores, NUMed is at the forefront of producing practice-ready graduates.
“The university’s Foundation Programme is a 12-month pre-undergraduate programme for students intending to pursue medicine, biological or biomedical sciences, or sciences at undergraduate level.
“Those who successfully complete this programme as required will be offered a place on either the university’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme or 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme,” the university said in a press release.
According to NUMed CEO and provost Prof Chris Baldwin, the university’s vision is to provide globally-acclaimed medical programmes that are responsive to the evolving demands of Malaysia’s growing healthcare system.
“Equivalent to its UK counterpart, NUMed’s MBBS programme is recognised by both the General Medical Council, UK, and Malaysian Medical Council. While all five years of the programme are delivered in Malaysia, students have the option of studying for up to 8 weeks at Newcastle University in the UK during their fourth year, or opt for an extra year in the UK for an intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level,” Baldwin shared.
NUMed COO Premila Nair said students will also benefit from the university’s vast resources and best practises, including a high-calibre faculty - as Newcastle University is a world-leading partnership of research scientists, medical specialists, teaching professionals, and member of the distinguished Russell Group.
Hence, students have the opportunity to learn from and be mentored by a highly accomplished and experienced international faculty.
“The university also incorporates innovative teaching methods such as student-centred learning which fosters deep learning, as well as opportunities for students to improve critical thinking, creativity, and confidence to graduate as well-rounded healthcare professionals,” said Nair.
Meanwhile, UoRM, a branch campus of the University of Reading in the UK which is home to five of the university’s renowned schools and institutions- Henley Business School, School of Law, School of the Built Environment, School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, and Foundation Studies and Language Institute- is ranked in Top 100 in the world for International Outlook by Times Higher Education 2021.
Its degree programmes are specifically designed to give students excellent career opportunities and professional qualifications. Students at UoRM get the same prestigious University of Reading degree delivered at the same highquality academic standards at a significantly lower cost.
UoRM provost Prof Wing Lam emphasised the significance of holistic skills in achieving career success.
“Employers are seeking graduates who are problemsolvers rather than problemseekers.
“Employers prefer graduates who can work both individually and as a collective unit. Ultimately, they are looking for graduates who are able to add value to the organisation and bring positive attitude to the workplace,” Lam added.
