SIBU: Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government II Michael Tiang gave some food donation to the family of a mechanic by the name of Lim Wee Sin who drowned after falling into the river on Thursday.

Tiang personally went to the family residence in Rejang Park here to hand over the items.

Social Security Organisation (Socso) also gave food assistance to the family, and also a one-off funeral management benefit to the family.

“The deceased was registered with Socso and therefore his family would receive monthly assistance from the organisation.”

The deceased is survived by a wife and three children. The eldest daughter has just completed her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman, said the daughter might have to forgo further study and find a job instead to support the family.

“I told her if she needs assistance to contact my service centre. University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) provides free education for foundation study. She could go there.”

Lim, 49, drowned after he fell into the river while trying to jump from a vessel to a pontoon at Jalan Lanang on March 31.

The incident was said to have happened at 4.26pm when he and his co-workers were packing up after work to go home.

Lim missed his step and fell into the river.

His co-workers tried to look for him but to no avail. Police and Fire and Rescue Department were then called.

His employer, meanwhile, made a ‘missing person’ report to Socso on Apr 1, and also submitted a compensation application form.

The body was found on April 2.
