MIRI: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak secretary Alan Ling visited the Warmonger Training Academy, a fitness centre at Miri Times Square here, recently.

He was accompanied by his special assistant Lawrence Low, DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak chairman Peter Hee and head of DAP Miri Action Unit, Alan Sia.

Their visit to the centre received a warm welcome from the academy director Gavin Mattu, who also briefed the visitors on western martial arts, particularly boxing.

The academy has a number of professional trainers who offer various types of training and fitness courses apart from intensive training exclusively for its members.

Ling was impressed with the many courses offered at the academy and urged youths here to check them out.

Meanwhile, Gavin disclosed that the academy members will be representing Sarawak at the Malaysian Fighting Championship (MFC) which will take place in Kuala Lumpur on May 21.

Apart from gaining experience and improving their skills, he said the championship will also be a great way to attract more people to take up western martial arts.

However, he said, they are still in need of donation and sponsorship to send their players to MFC.

Those who wish to make their contribution can contact Gavin at 011-29146823.

Speaking during the visit, Ling called on the community here to take up fitness activities to maintain a healthy body and mind after being plagued by the Covid-19 pandemic the last two years.

According to him, the community should take advantage of the relaxed standard operating procedures (SOP) to exercise and play sports in public places by adhering to the guidelines set by the authorities.

“As we have entered an endemic phase, we are gradually returning to normal life and this is the chance for us to exercise and have fun with friends and loved ones in public places and live a healthier life,” he said.

“Western martial arts and boxing not only can help a person reduce weight and improve their posture, but it is also the best way to release stress while attaining physical fitness,” added Ling.
