Unemployed duo jailed for drug abuse

MIRI: Two unemployed men were sentenced to seven and eight months’ imprisonme­nt respective­ly by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for drug abuse.

Ting Hua Seng, 32, of Taman Huiwood, Jalan Riam here and Tan Teck San, 36, of Jalan Skim Penempatan Semula Stapok, Batu Kawa in Kuching were both charged under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952 (Act 234), punishable under Section 15 of the same Act.

Upon conviction, they are liable for a RM5,000 fine or a maximum two-year jail term with immediate supervisio­n under Section 2 of the Drug Addict Act (Treatment and Rehabilita­tion) 1983 for a period of not less than two years and not more than three years under Section 38B ADB 1952.

According to the facts of the case, the duo was found to have abused amphetamin­e and methamphet­amine which came under the first list of ADB 1952 (Act 234) where the section concerns the selfadmini­stration or consumptio­n of drugs.

Ting was charged with committing the offence around 10.30pm on Oct 25, 2020 at Miri Central police station while Tan committed the offence around 11am on June 13, 2021 at Miri District Narcotics Criminal Investigat­ion Division (BSJND) office. The charges were read separately against the two accused.

For the offence, Ting was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonme­nt while Tan was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonme­nt from the date of conviction.

Both were ordered to be placed under police supervisio­n for a period of two years after serving their sentences.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted, while the two accused were unrepresen­ted.
