Muda concerned about deterioration of nation’s public institutions
KUCHING: The deteriorating state of the nation’s public institutions is a cause of great concern in that it indicates abuse and mishandling by certain authority figures, as well as erosion of integrity and good governance.
In pointing out this matter, Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) vice-president Dr Teo Lee Ken calls upon the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to defend the sanctity of national public institutions and stop power abuse.
He highlighted Ismail Sabri’s pledge upon taking helm of the federal administration – the commitment to uphold the integrity of public service and the national public institutions.
However, Teo said recent developments showed the opposite, such as reports about bullying and the racism culture in health services particularly involving young housemen and medical officers, the unreasonable allegations against a judge and criticisms against the judicial system, and severe lack of corporate governance and transparency in the country’s business sector.
“Muda urges the government to take the necessary disciplinary actions and punishment against the top political leaders who are abusing their authority over the state institutions for their own benefits or those of certain parties.
“We also urge that a special session in Parliament be conducted to discuss issues concerning the integrity of public institutions and empower the Parliamentary Special Select Committee to monitor investigations and suggest actions that the government should take in relation to arising issues.
“At the same time, we want the government to protect and guarantee the rights of those who voice out the concerns of the people regarding these matters, and they include members of the media, activists, policy researchers and NGOs (nongovernmental organisations),” said Teo in a statement.
