Socso Sibu completes ‘Bulan Pemutihan’ programme
SIBU: Social Security Organisation (Socso) Sibu has recently completed the ‘Bulan Pemutihan’ programme in the division.
According to its press statement received yesterday, the places visited by the Socso team included Sibu Jaya, Selangau market, Stapang, Kanowit, Lau King Howe Commercial Centre, Teku market, Taman Indah market, Permai Baru and Permai Timur, Delta Mall, Sungai Merah market, Wonderful Sungai Merah, Medan Mall, Farley Commercial Centre and Ulu Lanang Industrial Estate.
During the programme, Socso Sibu also promoted the Self-Employment Safety Scheme to hawkers and self-employed traders to encourage them to register with the organisation.
The ‘Bulan Pemutihan’ runs from May 1 until May 31 to allow employers to register their employees before Ops Kesan takes effect on June 1.
Employers can go to any Socso office nearest to them and voluntarily register their workers.
Delay in registration would result in companies being issued compounds and having to bear interests imposed for late payment of contributions.
The statement also said in the event of failing to register and complying with relevant requirements, Socso is empowered to enforce three Acts, namely the Employees Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4), employment Insurance System Act 2017 (Act 800) requiring employers of one or more workers to register these employees under both Acts, and Self-employed Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789).
Legal action including prosecution in court can be taken against any employers who fail to register with Socso.
If convicted, they could be jailed for two years or fined up to RM10,000 or both.
Employers who have yet to register are required to do so at any of the 54 Socso offices nationwide.
Meanwhile Socso Sibu acted on 12 cases of non-compliance as of April 2022.
The statement also said Socso acted on 28 cases in 2020 and 26 cases in 2021.
