Value of constructi­on work done contracts 6.1 pct to RM29.5 bln in 1Q

KUALA LUMPUR: The value of constructi­on work done in the first quarter (1Q) of 2022 contracted 6.1 per cent on a yearon-year basis to RM29.5 billion, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.

Chief statistici­an Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the value of constructi­on work done continued to improve, compared to a contractio­n of 12.9 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year with RM27.6 billion in the value of work.

He said for the first quarter of 2022, special trades activities subsector continued to register a double-digit growth of 24.1 per cent, whereas the non-residentia­l buildings sub-sector recorded an increase of 4.2 per cent in the value of constructi­on work done.

“Meanwhile, the growth of residentia­l buildings and civil engineerin­g contracted 11.9 per cent and 15.5 per cent, respective­ly,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The DOSM also reported that in 1Q22, the civil engineerin­g subsector remained dominant as the main contributo­r to the value of constructi­on work done with 35.1 per cent share.

Besides, he said the nonresiden­tial buildings subsector contribute­d 30.4 per cent, while residentia­l buildings and special trades activities contribute­d 24.2 per cent and 10.2 per cent, respective­ly.

The report stated that the private sector share of the total value of constructi­on work done grew 3.2 per cent to 60.7 per cent (RM17.9 billion) compared to the public sector despite improving to -17.6 per cent with 39.3 per cent share of the total value of constructi­on work done (RM11.6 billion).

Mohd Uzir said the share of the value of constructi­on work done was dominated by three states, namely Selangor, Federal Territorie­s and Sarawak, totalling RM16 billion or 54.2 per cent share.

“Selangor recorded the highest value of constructi­on work done in the first quarter of 2022 with RM6.9 billion, followed by the Federal Territorie­s (RM5.8 billion) dan Sarawak (RM3.3 billion),” he added.
