MoH: Covid-19 admissions rise after spike in infectivit­y rate during Aidilfitri week

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced yesterday an increase in admi ance into public health facilities due to Covid-19, as the country’s infectivit­y rate (Rt) sharply rose during the Aidilfitri celebratio­ns.

According to Health DirectorGe­neral Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, authoritie­s saw a 38 per cent increase in admissions to hospitals and low-risk quarantine and treatment centres (PKRC) per 10,000 population in the week of Aidilfitri.

In comparison, the week before had seen a decline of 27 per cent.

Admissions into public hospitals have also doubled, he said.

The same statement also noted an increase of Covid19 patients reporting to Covid-19 Assessment Centres (CAC) that week by 87.4 per cent, with the number 1of new cases under surveillan­ce at home spiking by 153.4 per cent.

This comes as the Rt spiked by 70.2 per cent from 0.57 to 0.97 that same week.

The number of Covid-19 patients in the week had more than doubled by 119.2 per cent from 8,732 cases to 19,137, with local infections making up the bulk of the cases.

Deaths also saw a slight increase of 3.1 per cent – one case higher than the previous week.

The total of non-severe cases – Category 1 and 2 – also doubled and is now two per every 100,000 population. The same applied to Categories 3, 4 and 5.

However, the use of beds in the intensive care unit (ICU), along with the use of ventilator­s dropped by 10 per cent, while those in non-critical units increased by 18 per cent.

Admission to the Covid-19 treatment centres (PKRC) also doubled.

The recovery rate, however, slowed down by 59.2 per cent, from 30,930 cases in the preceding week to 12,618 cases.
