SRDC urges public, students to help curb indiscriminate dumping
SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman is calling on the public including students to help curb indiscriminate dumping at Jalan Durin near here.
Describing such irresponsible acts as rampant, Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, stressed that everyone has a shared responsibility to preserve the environment.
He also noted litter from cars at road verges of Jalan Kong Yit Khim and below Durin Bridge.
“I would like to remind the public that the council is continuing efforts to curb illegal dumping of waste with stern action to be taken against culprits,” he said in a statement yesterday after officiating a ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) programme to collect rubbish along Jalan Durin junction at Durin Bridge.
Organised by SRDC Standing Committee for Public Health together with Citizen Middle School, the programme was part of SRDC Standing Committee for Health programme for Environment Cleanliness 2022.
“I urge students to be aware about cleanliness of their environment including their residence and surroundings, neighbours and residential areas.
“There is rampant indiscriminate dumping of rubbish and household wastes at the roadside. The younger generation will be the one looking after our environmental cleanliness and our mother earth in time to come,” stated Sempurai.
He added that people have to understand that the bad habit of throwing rubbish like plastic bottles, plastic bags, and other plastic items pollute the environment besides being an eyesore.
“While the council can clear and collect plastic waste, if this habit continues it would be an environmental hazard polluting our rivers and seas,” he pointed out.
Towards this end, Sempurai assured that SRDC will continue ‘gotong-royong’ as part of its continuous education and awareness programmes.
Joining the clean-up were SRDC Standing Committee for Public Health chairman Councillor Kong Chek King, assistant environmental health officer Rity Jawa, councillors Jeffery Nuing, Jaafar @ James Kusau, Loh Ling Tai, Binit Madang, Halima Jafar, Amping Ranggau, Gilber Angok, Michael Dee, Collin Tinting, Frederick Taip Ledom, Citizen Middle School Board members, principal and Dudong area Chinese community leaders.
