KUCHING: The Sarawak government must place immediate emphasis on addressing late infrastructure and telecommunication projects to ensure timely delivery, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
He said the development of basic infrastructure such as road networks, provision of water and electricity supply, and upgrading of bridges among others will accelerate the state’s socio-economic development and improve the people’s quality of life.
“The Sarawak government is very commi ed to providing basic infrastructure and telecommunication services to the people.
“I am happy that the implementing agencies will expedite the implementation of infrastructure projects that have been delayed due to Covid-19 so that the people can enjoy the benefits,” he said in his address at the opening of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) si ing here yesterday.
Taib also said he welcomed the state government’s efforts to continue providing an efficient transportation system to major economic centres in Sarawak.
“This public transportation system will use low carbon emission technology and adopt digital solutions,” he said.
He added that sea ports also played an important role in facilitating the movement of goods in the state, in view that Sarawak has an open economy.
“I urge the Sarawak government to review and improve the management of our sea ports with the use of innovation and adoption of new technologies to improve the ecosystem and ensure that Sarawak will be a pro-trade and pro-investment destination.
“I am confident that with the development of the modern infrastructure we have, Sarawak will become a competitive investment destination in the region,” he said.
On the state’s agriculture sector, Taib pointed out that Sarawak has land that can be used for large-scale agricultural activities.
In view of this, he urged more private sectors to be fully involved in this industry through automation and application of modern technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) to increase the production of quality agricultural produce.
“I am confident that in the next few years, the agricultural sector in Sarawak will transform into a high value-added agricultural sector, thus becoming a major exporter of food in Malaysia,” said the Head of State.
