Taib: New Indonesian capital expected to bring major socioeconomic opportunities
KUCHING: Huge socioeconomic opportunities are expected following the relocation of the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, Kalimantan, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
“The close distance between us and Nusantara will further strengthen bilateral trade relations.
“I hope the private sector out there is ready to seize and capitalise on these trade and economic opportunities in the future,” the Head of State said in his address during the opening of the second meeting of the first term of the 19th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
Taib noted that Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has taken a step forward to develop crossborder power connections with West Kalimantan.
“In addition, SEB is also working with Indonesian companies to develop hydroelectric projects in North Kalimantan. These projects will complement the Asean Power Grid,” he said.
In moving towards 2030, Taib said Sarawak will continue to explore new ideas for its future development through far-sighted initiatives introduced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said pointed out Sarawak is at the forefront of the development of the hydrogen economy in Southeast Asia.
“The hydrogen economy will be a major contributor to the economic wellbeing of Sarawak once we have reduced our reliance on traditional industries. We will create new sources of income to reduce our dependence on natural resources and dwindling fossil fuels.
“I am pleased that Sarawak is working with the private sector and foreign governments to harness the potential of the carbon market.
“New revenue streams from forest resources will be generated for carbon trading projects,” he added.
Taib arrived around 10am to officiate at the opening ceremony where he inspected the Guard of Honour, which was held at the compound of the DUN Complex.
He was escorted into the Chambers of the august House for his address by DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
