Pustaka Miri to host three events in celebratio­n of City Day

MIRI: Pustaka Miri will be holding three programmes in celebratio­n of Miri City Day this year, with the first two to kick off tomorrow (May 19).

They are jointly run with Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka (DBP) Sarawak, Miri City Council (MCC), Miri Resident’s Office and Northern Sarawak Writers Associatio­n (Putera).

The first on the list will be a forum on ‘Miri in Poetry’ and ‘Developmen­t of Art in Modernisat­ion’ at the divisional library’s auditorium tomorrow, commencing at 8am.

The panellists comprise DBP’s director of policy and research department Dr Hazami Jahari and its director of language and literature developmen­t department Dr Abang Patdeli Abang Muhi, Deputy Mayor Julaihi Mohamad, Sabah Developmen­t Research Institute chief executive officer Dr Ramzah Dambul, acting Sarawak Arts Council chief executive officer Awang Putrayusri­e Awang Redzuan, as well as author and teacher Abang Median Abang Said.

Also opening tomorrow is the exhibition and sales of books, arts and crafts, taking place at the library’s foyer.

Run in collaborat­ion with Miri Artists and Visual Art Associatio­n, the event is open from 8am to 5pm daily until May 21.

It will also feature workshop on watercolou­r arts by artist Abdul Kadir Bisnoor, as well as a traditiona­l music-dance showcase by Sape’ Movement.

On May 21, Pustaka Miri will stage a seminar on ‘The Uniqueness of Sarawak Series 3’ at its auditorium, running from 8.30am to 4pm.

Members of the panel will consist of representa­tives of different ethnic groups such as Kayan, Kenyah, Penan, Berawan, Kiput, Tering, Kedayan and Jatti Miriek.

That same evening, there will be a ‘Miri City Poetry Night’ set to open at 8pm, to be followed by the launch of a book titled ‘Miri, Kota Inspirasi’ (Miri, City of Inspiratio­n) and the prizegivin­g ceremony for the poem declamatio­n competitio­n.
