Temple committee receives greenlight for extension project

- Conny Banji

SIBU: The Sibu Eng Ann Teng Tua Pek Kong temple committee now can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the long awaited relocation project of the RC Pontoon Wharf in front of the temple is finally going to materialise soon.

The temple committee deputy chairman Soon Choon Kui said that the relocation would allow an extension project of the temple which was already approved by the State Planning Authority (SPA) in 2010 to take place.

“Since then, there was no further action from the authority to get into the agreement to relocate the pontoon.

“Two years ago, Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian came to Sibu and the temple committee informed him of the matter.

“So after the 12th state election, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng came and helped us to do with the relocation project,” he told reporters when met during a visit by the temple committee, Sibu Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) to the pontoon on Tuesday.

Soon said the cost for the relocation of the pontoon, estimated at around RM100,000, would be borne by the temple.

He said last Friday, the project consultant Kacapuri Architect had attended a coordination meeting with Chieng and all the authorities involved in the project.

“They agreed to relocate the pontoon but subject to a new location agreed to by Sibu DID,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kacapuri Architect town planner Liong Yong Chang said that DID and SRB had identified Pulau Babi Wharf as the new location for the pontoon.

“We still have to get approval from the Land and Survey Department for the relocation project and later on from the SPA,” he said.

Also present were Sibu DID divisional engineer Rudi Abang Zamhari and SRB representatives.
