KUCHING: Malaysia’s largest home improvement retailer, Mr D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd reaffirms its commitment to sustainability by launching two environmental initiatives under Mr D.I.Y. Cares volunteer team Thursday (July 14).

“Our Natural resources and biodiversity are important national assets and as a proud homegrown Malaysian brand, we want to play our part,” said Mr D.I.Y. Group chairman Dato Azlam Shah Alias in a press release. He thanked collaborators and volunteers for participating in the programmes which also increased public awareness of conserving biodiversity and elephant conservation.

In the Gutta Percha treeplanting project, the retailer was joined by Yayasan Telekom Malaysia and Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa in planting some 1,000 trees at Taman Botani Putrajaya within 24 hours.

The Gutta Percha project which made it into Malaysia Book of Records for planting 5,017 trees in 23 locations across Peninsular Malaysia was inspired by the ‘Greening Malaysia, Our Tree, Our Life’ campaign launched by Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to preserve the country’s biodiversity.

Sixteen Mr D.I.Y. Cares volunteer teams were on hand for the planting mission with the group contributing gardening tools such as easy-grip diggers and hoes, hand gloves, face towels, and shovels to ease work of volunteers.

In the collaborative elephant conservation programme with Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre and Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), 30 Mr D.I.Y. Cares volunteers including senior management staff went to the conservation centre in Pahang to support conservation efforts.

Volunteers cleaned the paddocks of elephant calves, restored netting around courtyards, repaired signage post, bathed and fed the elephants. The programme also increased awareness of challenges facing survival of elephants.

The Group continuously initiate and support efforts to preserve the environment. In November 2021, the retailer cleaned up Sungai Kedondong and Sungai Melaka as part of its #DIY4Sungai initiative.

In December 2021, Mr D.I.Y. Group was admitted into the globally renowned FTSE4Good Index 2021 in recognition of its efforts to positively impact communities where it operates.
