Mid-Autumn Festival in Sept to feature cultural innovations
KUCHING: The Mid-Autumn Festival on September 10 and 11 this year will be an intermixed celebration incorporating both tradition and modern innovation.
Sarawak Creative Arts and Cultural Association (SCACA) in its statement, said that the event with its theme ‘A Date with the Moon’ will feature a Mid-Autumn themed market, talks and workshops and a showcase of traditional Chinese arts.
Jointly organised by SCACA and the Free and Easy Chinese Calligraphy Association, the event will take place at No.6 Base @ South Villa (Lot 6, Jalan Tan Sri Datuk William Tan), extending to the MBKS Garden across the street.
The organising committees yesterday paid a courtesy call to Kuching South Mayor Dato’ Wee Hong Seng in regards of the upcoming event.
According to SCACA, the highlight of the festival will be ‘Moon atop the branches’, an art installation that depicts the story of the moon through a combination of art and technology, and which is inspired by the 11th century poet Ouyang Xiu’s famous line “the moon rose atop the willow tree / lovers kept their tryst after dusk”.
The project designed and planned by architect Tay Tze Yong is supported by Malaysia Institute of Architects (PAM), with participation of university students.
Lantern riddles, another tradition of the Mid-Autumn Festival, will be presented by teachers and students of Chung Hua Middle School No. 4.
Other tentative activities include tea ceremony, calligraphy exhibition, chess tournament, Chinese orchestra, traditional Chao’an mooncake workshop, storytelling, lantern painting and lantern parade.
The No. 6 Market is also anticipating more vendors of traditional and homecooked food, handmade items and small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to participate in the event.
Those who are interested to take part as vendors are to Whatsapp SCACA secretary Tay Yit Ping at 019-8178878.
