YPS holding Storytelli­ng by Rhymes webinar tomorrow morning

KUCHING: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will continue its Things That Bind Us (TTBU) project, which began last year, with a new webinar episode tomorrow (Aug 13) at 9.45am titled ‘Storytelli­ng by Rhymes – The Oral Tradition We Know Today’.

Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts officer Dr Elena Gregoria Chai Chin Fern, and retired teacher Yusuf Bujang who is a contributo­r to Persatuan Kesenian dan Warisan Melayu Kuching (Kewarisma), will speak on the art of telling stories through rhymes in Sarawak. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) senior lecturer Ringah Kanyan will serve as moderator.

Rhymes, or ‘bermukun’ in the Malay community, are used to tell stories by correlatin­g rhymes to reality, personal experience­s, convention­s, law, and cultural values.

“Rhymes are used in various cultures and traditions in Sarawak, and the speakers will elaborate and share their vast knowledge during this webinar session.

“Things That Bind Us aims to cultivate an appreciati­on for Sarawak’s heritage and culture as well as highlight its shared characteri­stics, while also cultivatin­g Sarawakian unity through our shared history, culture, and traditions,” said YPS in a statement.

The webinar is open to the general public. Call YPS on 082332700 by today (Aug 12) to register for the webinar. The foundation is running a total of six webinars this year, covering a variety of topics related to Sarawak cultures and traditions. The next episode of the webinar will focus on Sarawak’s po ery art.
