12 Sukma exponents begin monthlong training stint in Medan

-

KUCHING: As part of the preparation for Malaysia Games (Sukma) MSN in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 16 to 24, the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) have sent 12 athletes for a monthlong training camp and exposure stint in Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia.

This is the first time that WFS have chosen Indonesia for their overseas training stint.

WFS deputy president James Ting Ing Seek said the majority of the Indonesian national squad athletes are from Medan, the capital of North Sumatra.

“Medan is also well known as the wushu powerhouse in Indonesia. We are unable to continue with the tradition of sending our athletes for training stints in China because they (China) have not opened their borders to foreigners,” Ting told The Borneo Post.

“We are sending 12 athletes (to Medan) and they are accompanied by three coaches.

“While in Medan, our athletes will train along with the Indonesian national athletes.

“With Sukma just around the corner, centralised training is very important and I hope our athletes will take full advantage of this exposure stint to further improve their standard and skills,” he added.

The male athletes are Edison Wong Sing Yen, Edwin Wong Sing Yew, Mok Xiao Yuan, Danny Ling Hang Kee, Fung Tai Leong, Johan Wong Wei Xiang and Fu Sian Wie while the female athletes are Yong Arifah Khairul Kok, Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern, Fong Chai Xin, Elizabeth Beckxia Albert Arick and Carmen Chaw Jia Min.

They are accompanied by Sarawak head coach Yoong Thong Foong, coaches Lau Hui Wei and Diana Bong Siong Lin, and WFS treasurer William Lo.

Ting will join the group on Aug 26.
