Sabah club to send 14 to WCBF badminton in Sibu

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah (KK) Badminton Club will be sending 14 players to the World Chinese Badminton Federation (WCBF) Sibu Badminton Championsh­ips.

Organised by WCBF Sibu Club, the championsh­ip will take place at the Catholic High School Stadium in Sibu, Sarawak from Aug 25 to 28.

Team manager cum player Datuk Anthony Linggian said the championsh­ip was making a return after a more than a twoyear lapse due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Sabah (KK) Badminton club is registered with the World Chinese Badminton Federation and will be sending 14 players to the tournament,” he said in a statement yesterday.

According to him, the events to be contested are doubles for men, women and mixed pair for various age-groups from 40 years to 70 years and above, combined ages categories as well as parent and child (no age limit), husband and wife (no age limit) and open doubles below 39 years event.

Anthony said the state representa­tives will be eyeing several titles in various agegroup events.

One of the medal prospects is for the men’s doubles 70 years and above as well as combined age 140 years category where Anthony resumes his partnershi­p with Bruni Garip, where they were the bronze medallists at the BWF World Senior Championsh­ips in Spain in Spain last year.

“Sudirman Abas will partner Bakri Burahima for the Men’s Doubles 50 years, where they were silver medallists at the World Chinese Badminton Federation, Kuching in 2019.

“Henry Tai partnering Mahmud @ Jakariah Jamil too are medal prospects in the Men’s Doubles 60 years in their debut as a pair in the upcoming World (Chinese) Badminton Championsh­ips.

“Good results (from the championsh­ips) will portray better world rankings and obtain better draw advantage in internatio­nal tournament­s such as All-England Senior Championsh­ips 2023 and BWF World Senior Championsh­ips 2023,” he added.
