MIRI: The Lions Club of International District 308A2 Region 4 Zone 9 and 10 is organising a ‘Peace Poster’ contest, with the theme ‘Lead with Compassion’.

The programme is involving nine local chapters, namely the Lions Club of Miri Host, Lions Club of Miri Central, Lions Club of Miri Mandarin, Lions Club of Batu Niah, New Century Lions Club of Miri Resort City, Lions Club of Lambir Miri, Lions Club of Lutong, Lions Club of Miri Centennial and Lions Club of Marudi Mandarin.

The launch for the contest will take place at the city’s new landmark, the giant ‘Miri’ sign on Canada Hill, this Aug 16. The ceremony is set to commence at 8am, and will be performed by Lions Clubs International District 308-A2 District Governor Kapitan Connie Loh.

According to the programme’s organising head Mary Wee, the Peace Poster contest is among the major annual projects run by Lions Club of International, and its mission is to enhance the awareness and understanding amongst children of the meaning of ‘world peace’.

“It (contest) opens the opportunity for children, aged between 11 and 13, to express their own visions of peace by connecting with one another.

“Over the past three decades, Lions Clubs around the globe have been sponsoring a very special art contest, the ‘Peace Poster’, in schools and youth groups. More than four million young people from 100 countries worldwide have taken part in this contest.

“Creating peace posters gives children everywhere the chance to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through arts and creativity.

“The young artists are free to use any arts medium and they are also encouraged to portray their own life experiences and culture, in relation to the theme,” said Wee.

The Peace Poster contest is open to children aged 11, 12 and 13 by this Nov 15.
