KUCHING: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will be holding the fourth episode of Things That Bind Us (TTBU) webinar titled ‘The Art of Pottery; The Evolution of Sarawak Pottery’ at 9.45am today (Aug 20).
YPS in a press release said the webinar highlights on the pottery evolution in Sarawak and its shared characteristics that bind people together.
Three guest speakers are featured in the webinar namely Dr Franca Cole who works for the Sarawak Museum Department as a conservation and archaeology consultant; Ally Enterprise founder Nabilah Abdullah and Gardencraft.co founder Tuson Chong.
The webinar will be hosted by Datin Rosemarie Wong, a founder and director of Ranee Artisan Gallery.
“This episode of webinar sought to investigate various strategies for revitalising Sarawak’s iconic pottery traditions, particularly among younger generations, as well as to assess the business prospects of Sarawak’s traditional pottery industry and to explore contemporary marketing strategies in the modern era, with an emphasis on how it shapes and influences racial interaction in the Sarawak community,” YPS said in its statement.
“Clay, a natural resource, has the potential to be transformed into a variety of products. A potter’s precision skills shape a lump of wet clay into a pot. It is an ancient skill that our forefathers used to create cooking ware and ceremonial pots. Pots are mostly used as decorative items nowadays. These pots represent status and have cultural significance in certain ethnic groups.
“The decorative pots are wellknown as must-have souvenirs for visitors to Sarawak. Sarawak’s distinct identity and culture, which binds us all together, include the blending of Dayak and Chinese carvings,” it added.
The ‘Art of Pottery’ webinar is the second of six planned webinars for the TTBU series this year, and the fourth episode since its inception in 2021.
TTBU aimed to cultivate an appreciation for Sarawak’s heritage and culture as well as highlight its shared characteristics while cultivating Sarawakian unity through shared history, culture and traditions.
Interested members of the public will get the opportunity to learn more about Sarawak pottery with the esteemed speakers by joining the webinar. Participation in the webinar is free and open to the general public.
