‘Make aviation safety awareness a culture from school level’
LAWAS: Aviation safety awareness should start in schools and the community in view of the numerous airports and airstrips in Sabah and Sarawak.
In expressing this view, caretaker Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Sum Agong said he was confident that such programme would a ract the interest of students and benefit the local community in general.
“The Malaysian Civil Aviation Authority (CAAM) formerly known as the Malaysian Aviation Department (DCA) is an important entity in ensuring the safety of the country’s aviation sector is always respected by all parties.
“CAAM also plays a role in providing education and training to ensure that all industry players have a high level of readiness to operate by emphasising safety as a priority,” he pointed out.
Speaking when launching the programme at the Lawas Airport on Saturday, he said CAAM also takes steps to ensure that ma ers related to aviation safety also need to be extended to the community so that it can be made into a culture and practice.
This programme by the government through CAAM in collaboration with the Sarawak state government, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and MASwings Sdn Bhd aims at inculcating aviation safety to the entire community in this country.
“I fully support it if a programme like this is intensified and expanded to all airfields in Sarawak and Sabah because it can help give exposure and make the air transport sector in this country safer and more secure on par with other developed countries.
“This will help raise awareness among local residents regarding the importance of safety compliance at airfields, foster the value of aviation safety culture as a practice in the local community and then the organisers can jointly emphasise the importance of knowledge in issues related to aviation safety,” he said.
Henry Sum hopes that such synergy and cooperation between the federal government, state government and the community will be continued.
Also present at the function were secretary of the Air Division of the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, Mohamad Radzuan Mazlan; CAAM deputy chief executive officer (Regulatory) Captain Norazman Mahmud, political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Awangku Jinal Abedin Dato Pengiran Jawa; Lawas district officer Ladin Atok and acting senior general manager of MAHB, Kamaruzzaman Razali.
