New booster pump station marks end of water supply woes

- Matthew Umpang

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Batang Samarahan booster pump station marks the end of the water supply woes affecting the residents of the Samarahan Division.

The RM23.2-million facility would now be supplying clean water not only to areas here, but also to Simunjan, Sebangan and Sebuyau, said Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

It was stated that the Batang Samarahan station is among the largest in Sarawak, realised by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)led state government through the ministry, with Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as the implementing agency.

“The construction actually reached completion in March this year.

“The station has the capacity to provide up to 46 million litres of water per day,” he said in his speech for the opening ceremony of the station, located near the Batang Samarahan Bridge here, yesterday where he represented Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi at the event.

Adding on, Dr Abdul Rahman said a total of 297 water supply projects had been implemented throughout Sarawak, covering booster pump stations, water treatment plants, high-volume water tanks and installation of mains.

Moreover, he said the government had also implemented projects involving the connection of small pipes to villages and longhouses.

“It is a part of the water grid system being implemented throughout Sarawak. The areas include those in the state’s southern zone, involving the divisions of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian.

“The project will continue in the central zone, which is Sibu and Sarikei, as well as to the northern zone covering Bintulu, Miri, Limbang and Lawas.

“This project is an initiative by the Sarawak government, as it intends to provide large funds meant to ensure its whole implementation before 2030,” he said.

Also present yesterday were Muara Tuang assemblyman Datuk Idris Buang, Datuk Rubiah Wang who is the GPS candidate for Kota Samarahan, and JBALB Sarawak director Chang Kuet Shian.
