Man gets six years for sexually assaulting step-granddaughter
KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a 61year-old man to six years in jail and one stroke of the cane after finding him guilty of sexual assaulting his 14-year-old stepgranddaughter three years ago.
Judge Jason Juga also ordered the accused to undergo counselling during his imprisonment and one year of police supervision upon his release.
The accused was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable under Section 14 of the same Act.
The offence was committed at a house in the Matang area here, at around 3pm on Dec 11, 2019.
On Feb 18 this year, the court ordered the accused to enter his defence after determining that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him.
During the proceedings yesterday, the court granted a stay of execution following an application by defence counsel Abdul Rahman Mohd Hazmi, pending an appeal to the High Court.
The accused was also released on bail of RM5,000 with two local sureties.
DPP Norshafatihah Nor Azmi prosecuted the case.
