Hundreds flock to civic centre for PJMKM cheap sale programme

- James Ling

KAPIT: Hundreds of people gathered at the civic centre car park here yesterday for the Jualan Murah Keluarga Malaysia (PJMKM) programme to take advantage of the discounted food items on sale.

Organised by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) in collaboration with Keluarga Mart, the sales programme featured food and a variety of items at subsidised prices – with chicken, cooking oil, instant noodles, rice and biscuits proving the most popular.

Government pensioner Mohamad Johari from Kampung Baru said he and his wife arrived at 7.30am even though the sales only commenced at 8am.

“I had read in The Borneo Post about this PJMKM event, so my wife and I made it a point to come early. We thought we could avoid the crowd but when we arrived, there were already a lot of people present,” he said when met.

He said as a pensioner formerly with the Kapit Information Department, he has to be prudent with his spending especially now with the increased cost of living.

“We bought quite a few things as the prices are lower compared to those sold at the shops – enough to last us a month,” he added.

Keluarga Mart proprietor Ting Leh Sing said the two-day PJMKM programme which ends today is offering a total of 20 items at below-market price.

“Chicken wings and drumsticks are the most popular items and they are selling like hot cakes.

“Both are being sold at RM3.50 per kg less compared to the market price,” he said, adding the 300kg of chicken wings and drumsticks on sale were snapped up in a short time.

Meanwhile, KPDNHEP Trade, Distribution and Business Sector senior director Datuk Rohaizi Bahari, who officiated at the programme on behalf of caretaker domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said PJMKM is one of the government’s initiatives to help lessen the burden of the people especially those from the lowerincome group.

“Goods sold during the programme are between 10 and 20 per cent cheaper compared to the market prices. I hope the public will take advantage to stock up on essential items,” he said.
