Leon Lai crowned best singer in S’wak Mandarin Open Karaoke competition
SIBU: Leon Lai from Sibu emerged champion in the inaugural Sarawak Mandarin Open Karaoke Competition that took place in Saratok recently.
Placing second was Summer Wong from Kuching, followed by Saratok’s Mary Tee in third and Sri Aman’s Chong Chang Yu in fourth.
Lai received a cash prize of RM2,000 and a trophy.
The consolation prize winners were Yvonne Chiew, Ten Kim Loong, Michael Ling, Ling Sing Kiong, Law Yiung Ing, Phang Zhi Ning, Tang Shao and Leong Hong Chien. Tee was also named winner in the ‘Best Dressed’ subsidiary category; Ten the ‘Best Spirit’ categtory; and Leong the ‘Best Stage Performance’.
The competition also hosted the inaugural Malay/Iban/ English Open category, in which Sabanna Mohd Othman was adjudged champion. She received a trophy and cash prize of RM2,000. Placing second, third and fourth respectively were Noorashikin from Saratok, Neera from Betong and Michael Ling from Sibu.
Consolation prizes went to Yvonne Chiew, Leon Lai, Mohd Jumaidi, Azri Hanapi, Taha Arrifin, Lily, Frankly, and Alan Ho.
Under this category, Toh Bee Ping from Sibu was announced ‘Best Dressed’ winner, while ‘Best Stage Performance’ went to Neena from Betong. Alan Ho from Sri Aman won ‘Best Spirit’ for his sportsmanship.
The competition was organised by Saratok Karaoke Club with the aim of improving the standard of the local karaoke scene.
Presenting the prizes to the winners was event organising chairman Alex Lau.
